I’m not sure if all of you have heard of MySpace and Facebook, but they are online social networking sites with millions and millions of members. Facebook, especially, has become a political organizing tool. Check out some of the comments new Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick got from college and high school kids on his page. As college kids today are an extremely well-informed bunch, there is a lot of political history you have to understand to place these comments in the right context. Here it is: recently Deval got in trouble for spending tax-payer money on expensive drapes and a cadillac lease.

Ana Sampaio of Arlington High School writes:
hmm HELLOOO..CAN YOU LIKE STOP BUYING CARS AND DRAPES AND OTHER UNNECESSARY BULLSHIT AND ACTUALLY DO WHAT YOU PROMISED US YOU WOULD DO?!?!?!?
Uh huh, girlfriend. Deval, you got TOLD.

Jeremy ArmYstrong from Northeastern has a different take:
coup deval patrick, spendin dough cause he gets down like that…blingin up beacon hill

Alex King (Fitchburg), also comes to Deval’s defense, in her own short but eloquent prose:
your awsome!

And Alex Leblang (Boston University Academy) sums up everyones feelings, boldly proclaiming:
Join the macidonian empire!Macedonia and Alexander the Great Forever! Delian League Forever!!!
SWORD**ARROW* SWORD**ARROW* SWORD**ARROW* SWORD**ARROW* SWORD**ARROW*

Thanks to the internet revolution and more specifically, sites like Facebook, we can look forward to sophisticated, issue-driven political discourse like this for a long time to come. It makes my heart burst to think that in just a few years these cell phone/internet savvy Deval followers might very well be on the ballot themselves.
